Students in shared housing often neglect fire safety due to other priorities and a lack of awareness. They rarely receive fire safety education or discuss it with housemates. Consequently, one in four student residences fails to meet fire safety standards, posing significant risks.
I conducted a survey, held interviews, and performed desk research. The key finding was that many students are not well-prepared for fire safety and prioritize other aspects of their lives, such as their social activities. They tend to be quite lax about fire safety. Therefore, I aim to tap into their values to subconsciously elevate the importance of fire safety and facilitate conversations about it.
A smoke detector that, in addition to its primary function, features a speaker and party lights for student house parties. A corresponding app allows control of the speaker and lights. The plan is to promote the smoke detector on Instagram and TikTok through influencers or the fire-station who highlight the dangers of house fires.
